if your VMWARE fusion virtual machine hangs on 'Restoring virtual machine state'..

posted Saturday, 18 October 2008
I currently use Vmware Fusion on a Mac Book pro (mainly so I can still run visual studio if required). Recently when starting my machine it would hang on the 'Restoring virtual machine state'. Turns out that the fix for this is to get inside the .vmwarevm bundle and delete the .vmss file. This is the suspended state file which saves the state of a virtual machine. Be warned you can loose any unsaved work inside the virtual machine.

Ah hah! Thank you so much. That did the trick. Three tries to resume VM hung 7/8 of the way on the progress bar. That's the second time I unplugged my external hard drive before the state was finished saving. So glad it could be fixed

I'm currently having this problem and it's killing me that I can't get into windows. However, I don't know how to "get inside the .vmwarevm bundle and delete the .vmss file. " Could you please help me out! Thanks!

You need to right click on the file (or cntrl + click) and select 'show package contents'. Let me know if you still have any problems.

Thank soooooooooo much for this!

I recently contacted VMware with this problem and all they suggested was to purchase a support request.

Hello I'm new to this blog... I am having a problem with my vmmare player. I have downloaded it in my vm ware fusion. But when I click on it to launch the installer, a little box comes up that says unable to install in this virtual machine. Can you help me? Also I read your earlier post about the virtual machine restoring to a save state. I cannot find the .vmss file to resolve this problem can you any one help me with this?
